Seattle for the First Time

My Anteaters lost in their first ever NCAA Tournament game in Seattle. But you know what? I don’t mind. We played a good game against Louisville and I think that’s all that matters. Sure, I’m a bit sad, but definitely not anywhere near as sad as the piccolo player from Villanova.

I’m definitely glad I took Friday off to fly up to Seattle to watch the game in person. It was an expensive day. I will now proceed to eat $5 lunches…

Cinderella Team – UC Irvine Men’s Basketball Team

I’ll be honest. After many years of agonizing defeat at the Big West Tournament, I didn’t think we’d make it. Images of the best players on the team choking under the pressure played in my head. It’s happened before after all.

Now that UC Irvine is in the NCAA tournament, I desperately want to go to their first game in Seattle, WA. There are obstacles between me and Seattle, and I don’t know if they’ll be resolved in time.

Now the chances of me flying all the way over to watch my Anteaters win is pretty slim to nothing. Would it be worth it? Yes.

We’ll see.

Geeks on Holiday in the UK

Ever since I got addicted to Doctor Who (back in December 2013), I’ve wanted to visit the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff. The series has gotten the fangirl in me to go from 0 to 60 in three short weeks.

A few months ago, I decided to just do it. To go to the UK and have a geeky time in Cardiff. I even managed to grab two of my coworkers to join me. We decided to normalize our trip by going to other areas of the United Kingdom. After spending almost two months of going back and forth on our travel dates, flights, hotels, and travel dates, we were set.

One thing we learned while planning our trip was that traveling around Easter is a bad idea. The entire country was on break, so the hotels were a bit pricier than we would have liked.

While in the UK, I got to meet up with my FFXI Allakhazam friend, Pachichachi, and one of my former coworkers over there. It was pretty great.

Unfortunately for me, I caught a cold. Even worse, I was unprepared for the temperature, especially in Scotland. I took quite a bit of Beechams cold medicine, and discovered that acetaminophen is called paracetamol over there.

Side note: Now I know what the flight attendant said on the Singapore flight to Japan back in 2012. Paracetamol. Turns out the US/Canada and Japan are the only countries that use the word acetaminophen . Well, in Japanese it’s asetoaminofen or アセトアミノフェン.

Some of the non-Doctor Who locations we visited were Stonehenge, the Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, Scottish Highlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Liverpool. We also caught Three Sisters, and I got Paul McGann to say happy birthday to Penpen. Saw Once starring Arthur Darvill as Guy.

I really want to go back again soon. There just wasn’t enough time to see everything. Especially museums and the British Library.

Mugicha and Honey Bourbon

I have a lot of random stuff in my kitchen, and when it comes to mixing random things together, I’m good at making bad things. Welcome to my newest concoction: the mint, plain goat yogurt, mugicha (barley tea) and honey bourbon drink. It’s unnamed and currently chilling out in a cup in my sink.

So I didn’t like it too much. The honey bourbon is too sweet for my taste, even with the mugicha and yogurt. I bruised the mint leaves, but I didn’t taste any mint.

Experimentation fail.

Gallifrey One: Friday

I’ve been a sci-fi fan for most of my life. I’m not sure when I fell in love with the genre, but I know by the time I was in high school and with a driver’s license, I was driving my friends to sci-fi conventions in and around Los Angeles.

Today was the first time I attended a sci-fi convention dedicated to Doctor Who. Gallifrey One.

It’s a small convention in the Marriott next to LAX with attendance is capped to around 3,000 people. From what I can tell, it’s a really well run con. There wasn’t a moment where I felt like I was being ignored or mistreated. I like it a lot.

Things I purchased that I didn’t need: a book completely unrelated to Doctor Who, Sherlock Series 1 soundtrack, Arthur Darvill’s autograph.

On a side note, I forgot to ask Arthur Darvill if he was going to be in the West End production of Once when I was getting his autograph. Oops.

Twilight the Rabbit

After the passing of Sen, I noticed that Hoji was not as active as before. I let him mourn the loss of his friend, but after several weeks I decided that he needed a new friend.

In comes Twilight. I adopted her from PetSave Foundation in Hawthorne in early January. She’s a black rabbit with strands of white poking out here and there, much like Hoji. The only difference is that Hoji has a sleeker coat and Twilight is bigger with scar on her nose.

She’s cute, but she really hates Hoji. Every time attempt at bonding them, she starts a fight. In the beginning, Hoji wanted to be friends (at least that’s what it looked like to me), but now I’m pretty sure he’s ready to fight.

Ugh.
