Cakey Cookies

Why??? WHY??? My cookies have been coming up rather cakey recently. I don’t know why. I googled for answers. Some of the answers were too much baking soda (possible, the ink numbers rubbed off my measuring spoons), not enough sugar, too much beating of eggs and butter, and on and on.

Ugh, I’m so frustrated. I wasn’t sure what I was baking before as I’ve never made those particular cookies before. But now, now I’m sure the cookies are off. They don’t taste horrible. Just cakey. I want chewy. GRRRR. Tomorrow after work. Buying more ingredients. Attempt again on Friday night. Butter is a go. Need C&H brand white sugar. And new measuring spoons.

Poop

I made fudge cookies. They looked like poop while I was making them. They taste like chocolate cookies though. Very rich. Took the good batch to work. The first batch didn’t come out quite right. Kinda gritty. Second batch came out fine. Next round might be black-and-white cookies.

Didn’t get around to see 17 Again this weekend. Sadness.

Lemon Chocolate Chip Buttons

It’s been a while since I baked some cookies. I remember the last time I brought cookies to work was when I was still on RvB… I think… I made short bread cookies and ginger bread cookies with frosting, punched into various shapes. Yum. :9

Also, I had a crap load of butter that was going to go bad if I didn’t do something about it.

This time I made lemon chocolate chip buttons from the Mrs Fields cookie cookbook. Most of the ingredients I used were organic or Whole Foods-y. It came out well, except for the 2nd batch. I overcooked it and had to throw it away. It was gross. :(

I also started making my lunch for the week, but I’m going to have to finish in the morning as it’s already past midnight. :(

Ugly Bento, the Reality

Ugly Bento, originally uploaded by mouriran.

So here it is, folks. The ugly bento I was talking about. The koya tofu was pretty nasty and ruined the flavor of the rice. I tried to make a face out of the radishes and the tomatoes, but it didn’t come out right. The konnyaku should have gone in the middle so they’d look like brown teeth. It didn’t help that the radishes look like freakin’ boobs.

Oh well. You learn from your mistakes, and I surely did on this one.

Ugly Bento

I made an ugly bento lunch for tomorrow.

When I made this bento earlier this week, I noticed during lunch that I didn’t put any protein in it. That was no good. So this time I decided to add something. What did I choose? Koya tofu. Yes, the tasteless spongy freeze dried tofu. I even tried to add some flavor to it by sautéing it in a bit of soy sauce and mirin.

I don’t think it worked. The koya tofu still tasted kinda nasty. So I arranged it so it’d look like it has an ugly face on it. I’m hoping the taste will mellow out during the night, but it’ll probably still taste gross, too. I’ll find out for sure tomorrow when I eat my lunch.

Soba for Dinner

Tonight’s dinner was tororo soba with nira natto as a side.

Obviously, dinner is not complete with me messing up somewhere.

Mistake 1. I forgot the spinach. I failed to even think of quail egg.

Mistake 2. Using too much water/menmi.

Mistake 3. Pouring in ALL of the tororo into my soba.

It all made for too much salt, too much food. Although the nira natto was a good portion… if I had less soba/tsuyu.

Ku…ru…shii…. >.<;

Ratatouille

I made the French dish ratatouille as my contribution to the potluck tomorrow. I got it from the Nintendo DS “game” I bought a while back. Cooking from the DS is actually a lot easier to do than looking at a book. I just have to hit next or say, “continue!” and the DS will read it out loud to me. My only worry was that I would accidentally splash water (or something worse) onto my DS, or the strap would catch on fire.

Sukiyaki-tastic!

I made sukiyaki for dinner tonight. It came out good, although far from perfect. I got a bit lazy when it came to reading the instructions… Oops.

Once again, I took tonight’s dinner from November 2008 of Kyou no Ryouri. Yellowtail and scallops something… Well, that’s not what it says in Japanese… ぶりと帆立の沖すき. I don’t know what an “oki suki” is. Neither do my parents. I imagine it’s short for “oki sukiyaki”, but that “oki” part is what I don’t know. I messed up pretty well when it came to making the plum sauce. I failed to read the part that says to boil the konbu dashi and use pickled plum paste. If we all get food poisoning from that goof-up, oops. >_>;

The leftovers are going to be my lunch for tomorrow. :3 I also remade the plum sauce correctly this time.

Donabe, Makes Yummy Food

Ok, so the donabe I received for my bday was small for 4 people. I think I hear people snickering at me for thinking it was bigger. Hey, first time!

I ended up using our electric nabe. It was also too small for 4 people.

Luckily, it was for 3 people!

The chicken yuzu pepper pot came out delicious. But since I bought ingredients for 4 people, I had left overs. Some of those into the donabe to make lunch for myself today. Yeay! I used the donabe Sat gave me for my birthday!

At one point, I was thinking about getting a bigger donabe to feed 4 people, but seriously, I don’t want to spend the money. They’re expensive! :( I should throw another birthday party and ask for a donabe that will feed 4 people. >.> Oh, well, electric nabe is still good.
