Osechi… GO!

This year I’m thinking about making osechi for New Year’s. I’ve been buying Kyou no Ryouri magazines and one of them had osechi making recipes. I think I’ll try it. Follow instructions, get delicious food! Well, that seems to only work about 99% of the time.

I also might end up lazy…. We’ll see… >.>;

Wicked Good

My weekend was pretty eventful. More so than usual I would think.

Saturday, I saw an ikebana demonstration hosted by the Sogetsu Los Angeles Branch in Encino with my sister. One of her clients invited Laura and she asked me if I wanted to go as well. If I ever actually take ikebana classes, I don’t think I’m going to join the sogetsu school… Not really my style of flower arrangement… Some of the other arrangements I’ve seen on the web as much better, but I think I would rather stick with a more traditional arranging than the freestyle of that school. I’m not saying it’s a terrible style, just not my style.

Afterwards, I wanted to take my sister to Torafuku for a late lunch, but they were already closed. We ended up at Bourbon Street for some delicious cajun food. The owner talked to us as well.

I was going to go bike riding at night with the C.R.A.N.K mob, but I decided against it mainly because I was tired and the even started at 9:30 PM. Instead I played FFXI. >_>;

Today, the only major thing I did was go see Wicked at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood with a coworker. It was pretty good and I enjoyed it. I would like to get the soundtrack, but I’m trying to save money for a camera lens, so I’m probably going to put off doing that for a while. Some of the things I liked about the musical was the costumes that they wore. Some were normal looking, some were oddly shaped. It must be fun to wear such outfits. Definitely the story. It was about the wicked witch of the west, but more like the telling of her side of the story. I also really like the name Elphaba.

The only complaint I had was of the audience. Some kids sitting behind me were holding entire conversations. Seriously? In $100 seats you want to hold conversations? It’d be much cheaper to go to Starbucks, buy a $5 coffee and sit around for 2-1/2 hours. The guy sitting next to me turned around to glare after the intermission when they started up again. I thought that those kids have to be pretty rich to be able to sit in $100 seats. My parents would have balked if I asked to go see a $100 musical at their age. Also the guy in front of me sat up straight in his chair making it a bit difficult for me to see the stage.

The Library is Awesome

One of my coworkers lent me the books to the Sookie Stackhouse mystery series and got me totally hooked. The latest book is From Dead to Worse and still in hardcover form. I don’t want to pay $30 for a book of a series I don’t own except for book four.

I checked online to see if the book was available at any of the Torrance libraries, and lucky! The Southeast branch did! I went after work to pick it up. Yeay!

Layer of Soot

The fires around Southern California is pretty bad. It seems that every time there’s a heat wave around here wild fires flare up. This time it’s around Santa Barbara, Brea, and Santa Ana. I even opted to not drive to Irvine to play with the band last night because I didn’t want to breath up any more of the falling ash. I spent the day running errands, so I got plenty of the carcinogenic stuff.

I went outdoor today for a bit to clean out Sen and Hoji’s litter box. The trash bins were covered in ash. Yuck! Being outside was quite nasty.

Soybeans to Tofu, Attempt 2

Last week’s attempt at making tofu failed rather miserably. This time, I was better prepared. I purchased more cheese clothes, a pyrex measuring cup, and ever important thermometer. My dad helped again.

One thing I discovered is that as soon as the boiled soybean mush is strained, the soy milk is ready for the nigari. That’s what the little thermometer told me. Last time, I waited around since I didn’t know how hot 70° C is, and I had no clue how much soy milk I had. Scooping a cup out at a time cooled the soy milk too much.

When it came to pressing the soybean curds, I was a bit ill prepared. Since there aren’t any tofu making kits (that I know of), I had to improvise. Two cans of soup isn’t as heavy as I thought. I was hoping for tofu that was a bit more dense, but I ended up with soft tofu.

Pressing Bean Curds

Taste wise was good. My dad and I ate hiyayakko.

Tofu!

Company Wrap/Holiday Party

So this year, the company party is going to be held in Las Vegas instead of a bar somewhere in Los Angeles. It’s refreshing that it’s not at the Highlands or at Gotham Hall, but Vegas? It’s so far away. At least it’s paid for. Bus to Vegas and back, and one night hotel stay. Pretty cool.

My one guest is my sister. She initially turned it down because she thought that it was this month, not next month, but when I said it’s a Thursday, not a Tuesday, she realized her mistake. Yeay! I wanted to stay another day since we were there and there’s another bus leaving on Saturday, but my sister mentioned that it was our dad’s birthday. Oops. :x It’s actually on the Thursday of the party, but weekends are easier to deal with.

I think there’s going to be about 3 hours between the party and when we arrive at Hard Rock Hotel. I wonder if it’s possible to go to the Star Trek bar and get a “warp core breach”… >_>;

Star Trek Exhibit in San Diego

A group of my friends and I went down to see the Star Trek exhibition in San Diego Air and Space Museum. Walking around the place made my geek meter rise, and I finally wanted to see the original Star Trek episodes, which I never had wanted to before. They even had the Star Trek: The Next Generation Enterprise corridor and walking down it just took my breath away. It was like a dream come true. I was awestruck. I grew up watching ST: TNG, so seeing this corridor was just amazing. Have I described enough times how it was cool? I don’t think I have. It was magnificent. I would go through the thesaurus for more words that could describe it, but I think that might be overkill. It probably is overkill already. >_>;

After the exhibit, we looked at the other parts of the museum, and then wandered around the area. There are a lot of museums there. I wanted to go into the San Diego Museum of Art to see the kimono exhibit, but I guess all the museums there close at 5 PM. Boo!

Election

This is awesome. America has it’s first African-American president. Someone who I can believe in to move America in a better direction. Woohoo!

On the other hand, Prop 8 is going to pass. That is depressing. I don’t understand how there are people who are willing to take away another human’s right to a happiness? It’s disgusting.
